singles
soundtrack

says maura, "everybody should have this CD." and she's right. i used to, but this girl stole it from me (borrowed it without ever giving it back). paul westerberg, pearl jam and jimi hendrix. rad.

also recently acquired:
weezer pinkerton & weezer, the beatles the beatles 1, the virgin suicides original motion picture score by air, the sound of music motion picture soundtrack.

billy elliot
it's sweet and entirely amusing. any 11-year-old boy who's willing to pursue his dream -- even if it might mean alienation from his family and friends -- is a hero of mine. he's so adorable doing those pirouettes. bonus: british accents. mmm.

also recently seen:
where the heart is with my mom, so shut up, keeping the faith ed norton is a babe, return to me my mom's other rental choice and bounce i love ben affleck and gwneth paltrow. (so i'm a sap. deal.)

handmade books
kathy blake
my brother ricky makes the most beautiful books. he started to teach me once, but like the slacker family we are, we never finished the lesson. hopefully with this book, i can start up where we left off. i'm so very excited.

more birthday gifts:
norwegian wood haruki marukami, love in the time of cholera gabriel garcia marquez, the museum at purgatory nick bantock

made in california
art, image and identity

it's been way too long since i've checked out an exhibit at the la county museum of art. i used to work in the area and take advantage of free thusrday nights. there's this exhibit that i've heard tons about, "exploring the arts and image of california in the past century," that i must go to. wanna come?

switch plates
by anthropologie

yes, i know. these don't look all that special. i, too, used to think light-switch plates were useless--until i saw the one hanging in my new apartment living room. it's not just useless--it's tacky and godawful, as well. which is why this lovely one from anthropologie is a must. i'll need something to cover up the scratched paint after i tear it off the ugly one.

sawtelle kitchen
west l.a.
this, i think, is one of my new favorite restaurants in LA. it's japanese, sort of. they serve fancy schmancy unconventional dishes at decent prices. the space is hip, yet cozy. the food, of course, is divine.

also on sawtelle avenue:
asahi ramen & hide sushi, both cheap and good japanese restaurants. gotta love that.
