Taking a moment to breathe

February 24, 2004

It’s nice to have friends who make you want to get off of your butt and go, but sometimes we need friends to tell us it’s time to stop.

Stop. Breathe. Listen.

Tonight, I had a short, sweet chat with a dear friend. We had made plans, then we changed those plans, then we changed them again. We’ve both been doing so much and we finally realized it was time to take a deep breath and relax. Even if relaxing meant neither of us was going to get into our cars to drive over to the other’s house.

So, we talked instead about the past couple days and the next few months. We have plans, grand plans. Luckily, we also have time.

For now, I’m taking deep breaths and listening to the slow rhythm of my heart.

Thanks for the reminder to do that occassionally. I needed that.

  2. Kate says:

Hi, I was here a while ago and visited today because of an email from Penelope. And when I read over the first paragraph of today’s entry I swore it said, “…but sometimes we need friends to tell us it’s time to shop.”

I like shopping and haven’t done it lately so I guess that explains it. But shopping could be considered relaxation, could it not?

  3. liz says:

Thank you! I have been moving swiftly lately–gazelle like. I have been preparing for graduate school, working, loving hard, and growing tired. Yesterday I had to take off of work because the water heater in the attic above my apartment was busted. It leaked water into my living room; my ceiling is a mess. But yesterday while waiting for the repairmen, I relaxed. I read Vogue. I cleaned my kitchen and played with Tommy and Kimmie (my cats). I spent time looking through catalogs. I took some time to breathe and it was wonderful. Isn’t it is funny how something so unpredictable and disastrous could bring about such joy and peace.

  4. Katie says:

In an interesting turn of events, I was just doing research on the Jewish/Christian/Muslim practice of Sabbath and taking one day in seven for a time of rest from your usual work, and then I came here.

As someone who practices the Sabbath, I have to say that true rest is a massive gift.

  5. Gracey says:

That’s what I’ve been doing as well. I’ve been too absorbed with studying I wouldn’t let a pen or paper down. And now that it’s vacation, I gave myself a break from the mind boggling Dutch language.

  6. Meredith says:

Breathe, Breathe, Breathe. Its so important. I think of my girlfriends like breathing. You can’t live with out them!
