Iron Jawed Angels

February 13, 2004

I have so much more to say about this, but for now I will just say this: All of you who have HBO, please, please, please watch Iron Jawed Angels on Sunday night. If you don’t have HBO, find a friend, relative or neighbor who does and invite yourself over. You won’t be sorry.

The movie follows two activists, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns (played by Hilary Swank and Frances O’Connor respectively), as they fight for women’s right to vote. I got to see it last night, and found myself incredibly moved and inspired. While the fight took place over 80 years ago, the film tells the story in a fresh and daring way that especially speaks, I think, to me and my peers.

They were real women with dreams and doubts and desires. But they did not give up, and we are so blessed because of their courage.
