this weekend, i went a bit overboard with the bacon. while i didn't scarf down a big pile for breakfast, i did enjoy several dishes that incorporated its salty, smokey flavor:

  • a bite of her salad with pecans, cheese, carrots, wantons and chunks of bacon
  • a skewer of grilled scallops & shrimp (pieces of bacon were slipped inbetween)
  • the nob hill sandwich at fred 62, a tower of turkey, avocado, lettuce, tomato, thinly sliced onion rings and bacon, natch

what can i say? i just couldn't resist.

ladies and gentleman, i introduce to you: bacon perfume! now you can keep the scrumptious scent lingering in your nostrils long after breakfast. this photo is courtesy of an odd but friendly young man, who wishes to remain nameless. he also makes bacon candles and cupcakes. right.

this morning, i realized the only resolution i didn't keep last year was "eat less bacon." of course, how was i to know that i'd get smacked over the head with a slice of texas-sized inspiration a few months after making the vow?

a year wiser, i know that the key is not in deprivation, but moderation. a pile of bacon is a heart attack waiting to happen, but a couple slices on a saturday morning, now that is pure heaven.

sure, the holidays are famous for ham and turkey and roasts and even lechon, but my vacation brought much bacon. every morning, after each evening's festivities, we'd wake up starved. so, off we'd go to brunch. we went to millie's, home, fred 62 and ihop. i even cooked bacon one sunday for my brother! (it was the frozen-then-thawed remains of the first and only package of bacon i've bought for home to date. i overcooked it.)

favorite bacon? i'd have to say fred 62 does it best. millie's is good, too. of course, if you don't live in LA none of this means anything to you.

happy new year, bacon lovers. cheers to more of its greasy goodness!
