episode nine: walking on sunshine

christine climbed into bed earlier than usual. it was 10 o'clock. she slid under the covers, grabbed a pillow from beside her and propped it on her lap. she was writing in a notebook, lit only by her lamp to the right and the blue stripe on her stereo. somewhere, beyond the sea, the music crooned. her head rested on the headboard. black shiny hair against glossy oak. as the music got louder, her writing slowed. she looked pensive, maybe a little sad.

a new song. she continued to write.

i'm walking on sunshine.
a tear fell down her cheek.
i'm walking on sunshine, whoo-aa.
she sniffled.
i'm walking on sunshine, whoo-aa.
she bit her lower lip.
and it's time to feel good.

she glared at her stereo as tears filled her eyes. they were raining down her cheeks now. she wiped her eye with the side of her palm, but tears kept falling, steadily. she dropped her pen on the notebook, the tape stopped, and she sat there, staring straight ahead in the dimness.
