episode seven: rockin' and walkin'. | |

she sat at the edge of her seat, leaning forward as if she were about to dive into the crowd, her eyes transfixed on the stage far below. she was rocking slowly to the music, her left hand tapping her knee to keep time, her right leg joining in on the alternating beat. every once in a while, she'd close her eyes for a moment, as if she were about to fall asleep, and then she'd open them again and continue to sway. she turned to the boy beside her; he looked like a brother or cousin. he met her eyes with a question mark look. "he's so dreamy," she breathed. ... later, they were bouncing down the sidewalk, moving with the sea of people. the boy in front of them had a straw wrapper stuck to the bottom of his shoe. her friend tried to step on it as the boy lifted his foot off the ground, trying to time it perfectly so that he could "un-stick" the crumpled strip of paper. it was like a game, and soon she joined in. she weaved through the crowd, following the-boy-with-the-wrapper-stuck-to-his-foot, and kept trying to stomp down on the moving target. he must have felt her breeze behind him because he paused, looked down at his sneaker, removed the wrapper with his other foot and then glanced back. she quickly turned away and then scurried back to her friend, giggling like a 5-year-old. "nice," he said. "that was real mature." "you started it."
